What is USPS Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMb)?
Understanding IMb
The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) is a USPS tracking technology that enables end-to-end visibility of your mail pieces through the postal network. It contains routing and tracking information that helps automate mail processing and provides detailed delivery status updates.
Important Note About Tracking: Unlike package tracking, IMb tracking does not provide delivery confirmation. It only shows where your letter was last scanned in the USPS processing network. Once a letter leaves the final processing facility for delivery, no further scans are recorded.
Why You Need a Mailer ID (MID)
A Mailer ID is a unique identifier assigned by USPS that is required to generate IMb barcodes. Your MID is encoded in the barcode and helps identify you as the mailer, enabling tracking and delivery status updates for your mail pieces.
How to Get a USPS Mailer ID (MID)
Step 1: Create a Business Customer Gateway (BCG) Account
Visit the USPS Business Customer Gateway and click on "Register for Free" to create your account.
- You'll need to provide basic information about yourself and your business
- Choose a username and password
- Verify your email address
Step 2: Request a Mailer ID
After logging into your BCG account:
- Click on "Mailing Services" in the main menu
- Select "Mailer ID" from the available services
- Click "Request a MID"
- Fill out the required information
- Submit your request
Step 3: MID Types
USPS offers two types of MIDs:
- 9-digit MID: Available to all mailers without volume requirements
- 6-digit MID: Available to high-volume mailers (requires proof of mailing volume)
Note: The MID request process typically takes 24-48 hours for USPS approval. Once approved, you'll receive an email confirmation with your MID, which you can then use to sign up for First Class Mailer.
